I chose health care as a profession because I like the mix of technology and science and its application to people. Perhaps my interest in urology is an extension of my formative years working with my father, who was a plumbing contractor.

I am a native of Green Bay and appreciated the opportunity to return here when a position became available over 14 years ago.

My philosophy of care values listening to patients and discussing their urologic health care needs and concerns. I offer robotic prostate surgery, sacral nerve stimulation for the treatment of incontinence, minimally invasive kidney stone surgery as well as laparoscopic surgery.

I have been married since 1989 and have three sons. Outside of work, I enjoy skiing and golfing.

With the evolution of minimally invasive surgery, laparoscopy, and most recently, robotic surgery, I am able to offer my patients procedures that we never imagined during training. For my patients, this means less pain and risk and a quicker return to their activities.

I love being an urologist for many reasons, but what drew me to the specialty initially was the wide variety of what we may be called to do, both in clinic and in the operating room. We also see all types of patients including men and women, children and adults. The field of urology is constantly changing and improving and I enjoy the challenge of improving with it.

As a youth I spent a fair amount of time on my mother’s family farm. There I was able to witness firsthand various physiologic processes. I remember being fascinated by what the “insides” of various animals looked like when the opportunity to see such sights occurred. In high school and college that curiosity easily carried over to human anatomy and physiology. Academically, my strengths were in biology and chemistry, and my family, especially my mother who was an operating room nurse, nurtured these interests. During a service trip to work with the poor in rural Appalachia, I experienced the enormous satisfaction that comes with serving others and reaffirmed my desire for a career that would continue to provide that opportunity. A career as a physician seemed to be the perfect fusion of my interests and strengths.

During a clinic appointment I will always try to listen closely and focus on the primary concerns of the patient. I will explain the diagnosis as well as the reasons for my treatment recommendations in understandable terms. It is important to me that the patient understands the options and agrees with the treatment plan. When the patient clearly understands what treatment choices are available to them and why, they are much more likely to comply with their treatment and ultimately, live healthier lives.

Along with Urology, my other focus in life is my family. My wife is a pediatrician and I have three wonderful boys with whom I love to ride bikes, read, play soccer and go sailing and fishing. My wife and I enjoy running and road biking together as well as an occasional dinner alone. I am the oldest of nine children and we are all very close, despite the challenges posed by distance and busy lives.

As an urologist, I care for patients of all ages and at all stages of life. I utilize laser and minimally invasive techniques when possible, especially in regard to enlarged prostates and kidney surgery. I perform all modalities of renal laparoscopy for both cancer and benign diseases of the kidney. My services range from consultation to surgery.

I became a physician because I wanted a profession that would challenge me for my entire professional career. Medicine is constantly changing and I enjoy being a “life-long” learner.

I consider myself a general urologist and enjoy all aspects of urologic medicine. However, I particularly enjoy working with children and with patients facing urologic cancer and stone disease.

I enjoy when patients come to their appointment with questions and I am also very willing to provide all necessary information. The best thing they can bring is an open mind and a sense of comfort that it is my intention to help them with whatever urological problems they have.

I want my patients to participate in their health care. I will help them understand the options and feel comfortable with the decisions they need to make. I also believe it is critical for me to stay in touch with the patient’s primary care physician, to keep him or her abreast of the patient’s progress.

My hobbies and personal interests include spending time with my Chesapeake Bay retriever named “Cayenne,” and playing golf. I am certified in SCUBA, and enjoy riding my mountain bike and working out on a regular basis. I also enjoy traveling.
